impossible jacket

jacket - burda 09/2014, #134

the jacket that almost didn't happen
..
first i cut the pieces in fashion fabric
(navy colored tweed, with splotches of gray)
only to realize that the fabric is too thin for the type of jacket i had in mind
even with quilted lining i bought
so i had to go back to fabric store
and find another wool fabric
(brown boiled wool, not pictured)
to use it as underlining
..
when i finally started working on jacket
i made the craziest mistake ever
by sewing my first welt pocket
to the back jacket piece!?
..
so i abandoned the whole project
until i figure out what to do
as i used up almost all the fabric
and could not cut new back piece
..
in the end i realized i have enough fabric
to cut lower half of the back piece
and piece it with upper half of original one
so, the jacket now has a horizontal seam at the back
..
from that moment on
jacket was quite easy to assemble
(but it took me 4 months to get to that moment
and one afternoon to do the rest of the work)
..
those funny gray concentric circles
are my poor attempt in embroidery
and are supposed to represent tree growth rings..
nikola is a forester
so i thought he might like them because of that
plus, jacket ended up being present for his birthday
that happens to be our 10th anniversary too
so to  honor that, i made 10 circles in attempt of applied dendrochronology..
so yeah, im cheesy like that
..

    1. thanks, ginger.. frustrating it was, but i'm glad i finally made it (even though it will have to wait til fall to get some serious wear, as it's way too hot for wool jackets at the moment)

u pozamanteriji kod cvetkove pijace (mislim da se zove perla).. ima raznih boja, ali je bas debela, samo za jaknu moze da se iskoristi, za duks bi bila predebela

    1. thanks, merche dear :) you totally should make wool one, when the winter is back.. i might try making another one for him, but in stretchy fabric.. when it comes to ladies versions of bomber jackets, although i love them on so many girls, i can't see myself wearing one

  9. Happy Anniversary and you did a great job in salvaging a great jacket and gift! Sometimes we have to walk away from a project and then the light bulb goes off on how to recover. I may snag this one for my hubby for the fall!

  10. a very belated happy anniversary to y'all!

that back welt pocket is a sure sign that sewing for men is a dangerous task. but it turned out hubba hubba on your stud, sis. maybe this'll push me into finally adding buttons on a seven month old shirt for ruggy....

  11. Hi, I'm working on this jacket now as a gift for a friend. I have a question about the back lining - are you supposed to remove the width of the facing from the center back? I'm so confused. Thanks!

  12. hi :) sorry it took me ages to respond, i'm at my grandma's, and internet is pretty lousy up in the mountains :) yup, you are supposed to remove it yourself.. you can make different pattern piece for it, but i find it easier to use the same pattern, and when i cut it, i just remove the extra fabric (if that makes any sense).. but, i guess you've figured that all by now :) and i hope your jacet is going to turn wonderful :)
